Duas before sleeping, with Arabic and sources

These are the duas and passages of the Quran the Prophet ﷺ said when he went to bed, or taught his Companions to say. Each one is below in Arabic, with transliteration, a translation, and the hadith it comes from.

Twelve are established and listed first; most are in Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim. One more, reciting Surah as-Sajdah and Surah al-Mulk before sleeping, is graded differently by hadith scholars and is listed at the end with each grading named.

How the Prophet ﷺ went to bed

He told al-Bara' ibn 'Azib: when you go to bed, make wudu as you would for prayer, lie on your right side, and then say the dua that begins "Allahumma aslamtu..." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6311). He told his Companions to shake out the bed first, since you do not know what has come onto it (Sahih al-Bukhari 6320).

He would put his right hand under his cheek (Sunan Abi Dawud 5045), recite the last three surahs of the Quran into his cupped hands and wipe them over his body (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017). You do not have to say every dua below. Each is a separate practice, and any of them is good to keep.

The duas

Every night when he went to bed, the Prophet ﷺ cupped his hands, blew into them after reciting these three surahs, then wiped his hands over as much of his body as he could, starting with his head, face and the front of his body. He did this three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017).

2.Ayat al-Kursi

From the Quran

Allāh - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allāh and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination." Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people." Scholars differ on these

These are widely shared, but hadith scholars graded the narrations differently. Each one names who accepted it and who judged it weak.

1.Surah as-Sajdah and Surah al-Mulk

Grading disputed

Grading: Accepted: al-Albani graded it sahih (al-Silsilah al-Sahihah 585; Sahih al-Tirmidhi 2892), al-Hakim graded it sahih on Muslim's conditions, and Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut graded it sahih in his notes on the Musnad (14659). Questioned: Ibn Baz graded it weak; the Darussalam edition of al-Tirmidhi grades it da'if; Ibn Hajar named two weaknesses in its chain; al-Sakhawi said it is mursal with a supporting narration.

Sources and method

Each dua on this page is copied from its source, not rewritten: the Quran from quran.com, and hadith from the collections named under each dua, checked on sunnah.com. Where a hadith grading is given, it is the grading of the scholar named next to it, not our own. Repetition counts appear only where the narration states them.

Each item is labelled as Quranic, an authentic Prophetic dua, a dua whose grading scholars dispute, a general dua, or popular wording with no established Prophetic source. Sources were last checked on 2026-10-07. Read our editorial standards, and if you find an error, please tell us.

Frequently asked

What is the dua before sleeping?

The shortest is "Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya" (In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live), which the Prophet ﷺ said when he went to bed (Sahih al-Bukhari 6324). He also taught longer duas, and the one he told al-Bara' ibn 'Azib to make his last words before sleep begins "Allahumma aslamtu..." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6311).

Should I read Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping?

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed that whoever recites it on going to bed has a guardian from Allah with him, and no devil comes near him until morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311).

Which surahs did the Prophet ﷺ recite before sleeping?

Every night he recited al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas into his cupped hands and wiped them over his body, three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017). He also said the last two verses of al-Baqarah suffice whoever recites them at night (Sahih al-Bukhari 5009). Reciting as-Sajdah and al-Mulk is in a narration that scholars grade differently; see the end of the page.

What do I say when I wake up?

"Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur" (Praise be to Allah who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection). Sahih al-Bukhari 6324.
