Duas & adhkar

Morning adhkar, with Arabic and sources

Morning adhkar (adhkar al-sabah) are the words of remembrance the Prophet ﷺ said, or taught his Companions to say, at the start of the day. Below is each one in Arabic, with transliteration, a translation, how many times to say it, and the hadith it comes from with its grading.

We checked every item in the morning and evening chapter of Hisn al-Muslim against the original hadith collections. Sixteen are established and listed first. Six more are widely shared but graded differently by hadith scholars; they are listed separately at the end, with each scholar's grading named, so you can see where the disagreement lies.

When to say them

The hadith do not give a clock time. They say "when he reached the morning" and "when he reached the evening". Scholars take the windows from verses such as "exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting" (Quran 50:39, Saheeh International) and "So exalted is Allāh when you reach the evening and when you reach the morning" (Quran 30:17).

Ibn al-Qayyim described the two ends of the day as the time from the dawn prayer to sunrise, and from the 'Asr prayer to sunset. The Prophet ﷺ said that sitting with people remembering Allah from the dawn prayer until sunrise, and from 'Asr until sunset, was dearer to him than freeing four slaves (Sunan Abi Dawud 3667, graded hasan by al-Albani).

Scholars give wider windows too. Ibn 'Uthaymin said the evening runs from after 'Asr until 'Isha, and that someone who forgot and says them later can hope to be rewarded. Egypt's Dar al-Ifta gives a wider range still, with the best time after the dawn prayer until sunrise, and after 'Asr until sunset. If you are unsure which view to follow, ask a scholar you trust.

1.Ayat al-Kursi

From the Quran

Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwal-Ḥayyul-Qayyūm, lā ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa lā nawm, lahu mā fis-samāwāti wa mā fil-arḍ, man dhal-ladhī yashfa`u `indahu illā bi'idhnih, ya`lamu mā bayna aydīhim wa mā khalfahum, wa lā yuḥīṭūna bishay'im-min `ilmihi illā bimā shā', wasi`a kursiyyuhus-samāwāti wal-arḍ, wa lā ya'ūduhu ḥifẓuhumā, wa huwal-`Aliyyul-`Aẓīm.

Allāh - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. (Saheeh International (quran.com))

Reciting it morning and evening comes from the narration of Ubayy ibn Ka'b, graded sahih by al-Albani (Sahih al-Targhib 662) and with a good chain by al-Mundhiri. Al-Albani later judged the morning-and-evening wording an irregular (shadh) addition (al-Silsilah al-Sahihah 7/743). Reciting it before sleep is in Sahih al-Bukhari (2311).

We have entered a new day and with it all dominion is Allah's. Praise is to Allah. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner. To Allah belongs the dominion, and to Him is the praise, and He is Able to do all things. My Lord, I ask You for the goodness of this day and of what comes after it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and of what comes after it. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and helpless old age. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Fire and from the punishment of the grave. Grading: Weak: al-Albani (Da'if Abi Dawud 5069; al-Silsilah al-Da'ifah 1041); al-Haythami noted Baqiyyah ibn al-Walid, a narrator known for concealing weak links, in the chain; al-Dhahabi said one narrator is unknown. Accepted: Ibn al-Qayyim and Ibn Baz graded it hasan, Ibn Hajar graded it hasan gharib, al-Nawawi said its chain is good, and Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut graded it hasan in his notes on Abu Dawud.

Grading disputed

Allāhumma mā aṣbaḥa bī min ni`matin aw bi'aḥadin min khalqik, faminka waḥdaka lā sharīka lak, falakal-ḥamdu wa lakash-shukr.

O Allah, whatever blessing I or any of Your creation have this morning is from You alone, without partner. To You belongs all praise and to You all thanks. (Hisn al-Muslim translation (sunnah.com), evening wording adapted)

Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 5073Hisn al-Muslim no. 81

Grading: Weak: al-Albani (Da'if Abi Dawud 5073) and Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut (chain weak, in his notes on Abu Dawud); al-Dhahabi said one narrator is barely known. Accepted: Ibn Hajar, Ibn al-Qayyim and Ibn Baz graded it hasan; al-Nawawi said its chain is good; Ibn Hibban included it in his Sahih (861). The words "or any of Your creation" are in Ibn Hibban's version, not in Abu Dawud's.

Raḍītu billāhi Rabbā, wa bil-Islāmi dīnā, wa bi-Muḥammadin nabiyyā.

I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad ﷺ as my Prophet. (Hisn al-Muslim translation (sunnah.com))

Grading: Accepted: Ibn Hajar graded the three-times wording hasan; Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut graded it sahih through supporting narrations; al-Haythami said its narrators are trustworthy. Weak: al-Albani graded the three-times wording weak (al-Silsilah al-Da'ifah 5020). A shorter morning version without a count was graded hasan through supporting narrations by al-Albani (Sahih al-Targhib 657).

4.Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa huwa (7 times)

Ḥasbiyallāhu lā ilāha illā huwa `alayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa Rabbul-`Arshil-`Aẓīm.

Allah is sufficient for me. There is none worthy of worship but Him. In Him I put my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne. (Hisn al-Muslim translation (sunnah.com))

Grading: The words are the end of Quran 9:129, and saying them is good at any time. What scholars differ on is the practice of saying them seven times every morning and evening with the reward mentioned. Sunan Abi Dawud 5081 reports it as the words of the Companion Abu al-Darda'. Accepted: al-Mundhiri said it is not below hasan (al-Targhib 1/307); Ibn Baz said the chain to Abu al-Darda' is good; Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut graded the chain sahih (notes on Zad al-Ma'ad), while judging part of its wording a rejected (munkar) addition. Weak: al-Albani graded the Abu Dawud report fabricated (mawdu') and the version attributed to the Prophet ﷺ rejected (munkar, al-Silsilah al-Da'ifah 5286); Ibn Kathir called the added wording strange (gharib).

5.We have entered the morning... I ask You for the good of this day

Aṣbaḥnā wa aṣbaḥal-mulku lillāhi Rabbil-`ālamīn. Allāhumma innī as'aluka khayra hādhal-yawm: fatḥahu, wa naṣrahu, wa nūrahu, wa barakatahu, wa hudāhu, wa a`ūdhu bika min sharri mā fīhi wa sharri mā ba`dah.

We have entered the morning and the dominion belongs to Allah, Lord of all the worlds. O Allah, I ask You for the good of this day: its victory, its help, its light, its blessing and its guidance, and I seek refuge in You from the evil in it and the evil after it. (Hisn al-Muslim translation (sunnah.com), evening wording adapted)

Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 5084Hisn al-Muslim no. 89

Grading: Weak: al-Albani (Da'if Abi Dawud 5084; al-Silsilah al-Da'ifah 5606), Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut in his notes on Sunan Abi Dawud, and al-Mundhiri and al-Shawkani, who noted criticism of narrators in the chain; Ibn Hajar called it gharib. Accepted: Ibn al-Qayyim graded it hasan (Zad al-Ma'ad), al-'Iraqi said its chain is good, and al-Arna'ut graded the chain hasan in his notes on Zad al-Ma'ad. Al-Albani graded it hasan in Sahih al-Jami' (352) but weak in the two works above. The evening wording is not in the narration, which only says to say "the like of it" in the evening.

6.Sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ (10 times)

Grading disputed

Allāhumma ṣalli wa sallim `alā nabiyyinā Muḥammad.

O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad. (Hisn al-Muslim translation (sunnah.com))

Say 10 timesSource: al-Tabarani, via al-Targhib wal-Tarhib 1/314Hisn al-Muslim no. 98

Grading: Sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ is commanded in the Quran (33:56) and is good at any time. What scholars differ on is this count, ten times morning and evening, with the promise of his intercession, reported by al-Tabarani from Abu al-Darda'. Accepted: al-Mundhiri and al-Haythami said one of its two chains is good (al-Targhib wal-Tarhib 1/314; Majma' al-Zawa'id 10/123), and al-Suyuti graded it hasan. Weak: al-'Iraqi and al-Sakhawi noted a break in the chain; al-Albani first graded it hasan (Sahih al-Jami' 6357), then withdrew that and graded it weak (al-Silsilah al-Da'ifah 5788).

Sources and method

Each dua on this page is copied from its source, not rewritten: the Quran from quran.com, and hadith from the collections named under each dua, checked on sunnah.com. Where a hadith grading is given, it is the grading of the scholar named next to it, not our own. Repetition counts appear only where the narration states them.

Each item is labelled as Quranic, an authentic Prophetic dua, a dua whose grading scholars dispute, a general dua, or popular wording with no established Prophetic source. Sources were last checked on 2026-10-07. Read our editorial standards, and if you find an error, please tell us.

Frequently asked

When should I say the morning adhkar?

Many scholars, including Ibn al-Qayyim, say from the dawn (Fajr) prayer until sunrise. Others give a wider window that runs later into the morning. The hadith themselves only say "when he reached the morning".

Do I have to say all of them?

No. Each one is a separate practice from the Sunnah, and saying any of them is good. Many people start with a few and add more over time.

What is the difference between the morning and evening adhkar?

Most are the same, with the words changed from morning to evening, for example "asbahna" (we have entered the morning) becomes "amsayna" (we have entered the evening). A few are said only in the morning, and one, seeking refuge in the perfect words of Allah, only in the evening.

Why are some well-known adhkar listed separately?

Because hadith scholars graded the narrations behind them differently: some accepted them and others judged them weak. We list who said what, by name, rather than choosing a side. If you are unsure whether to include them, ask a scholar you trust.

Is Ayat al-Kursi part of the morning adhkar?

It is in Hisn al-Muslim's morning and evening list, based on a narration al-Albani graded sahih, though he later judged its morning-and-evening wording irregular. Reciting it before sleep is in Sahih al-Bukhari.
