Biography

Mahmoud Khalil Al-Husary (1917–1980) was an Egyptian Quran reciter, born on 17 September 1917 in the village of Shubra al-Namla near Tanta, in Gharbia Governorate. He memorised the Quran as a child and later studied the ten qiraʾat at Al-Azhar. In 1944 he ranked first in Egyptian Radio's examination for Quran reciters. In 1955 he became reciter of the Al-Hussein Mosque in Cairo, and in 1961 he was appointed by presidential decree as head of Egypt's Quran reciting schools.

Al-Husary is credited as the first to record a complete murattal recitation of the Quran: in the riwayah of Hafs ʿan ʿAsim in 1961, then Warsh ʿan Nafiʿ in 1964, and Qalun and al-Duri in 1968. He also recited abroad, including at the United Nations in 1977. He died on 24 November 1980. His recordings are still widely used for Quran memorisation.
