Sheikh Ali Al-Hudhaify علي الحذيفي

Sheikh Ali Al-Hudhaify (b. 1947) is a Saudi Quran reciter and an imam and khatib of Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah, where he has led prayers since 1979. Known for his slow, deep and precise recitation, he holds ijazahs in the ten readings, has recorded the complete Quran and has delivered the Arafat sermon of Hajj.

He was born in the village of Al-Qarn Al-Mustaqim in Al-Ardiyat governorate, in the south of the Makkah region, where he studied at the local kuttab and memorised the Quran. In 1381 AH (1961) his family moved to Baljurashi, where he graduated from the Scientific Institute in 1388 AH (1968); he then earned a bachelor's degree from the College of Sharia at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in Riyadh in 1392 AH (1972). He went on to a master's degree at Al-Azhar University in 1395 AH (1975) and a doctorate in fiqh there.

He taught at the Baljurashi Scientific Institute and was appointed an assistant professor at the Islamic University of Madinah in 1397 AH (1977), teaching in several colleges including the Quran College's qira'at department. He was appointed imam and khatib of Quba Mosque in 1398 AH (1978), a year before his appointment to the Prophet's Mosque, and was transferred to Masjid al-Haram as an imam from 1 Ramadan 1401 AH (1981) before returning to the Prophet's Mosque in 1402 AH (1982). He received an ijazah in the ten qira'at from Ahmad Abdulaziz Al-Zayyat and an ijazah in the Hafs narration from Amer Al-Sayyid Othman, and two of his complete Quran recordings were made at the King Fahd Complex, in the Hafs and Shu'bah narrations. He headed the scientific committee that reviewed the Madinah Mushaf and sat on the high board of the King Fahd Complex. He delivered the Arafat sermon at Namirah Mosque during the Hajj of 1447 AH (2026).
